Driving and the Environment: How to Travel Green | Phil Gilbert Toyota

Maintain your Car Regularly

A well-maintained car is more fuel efficient and therefore emits less greenhouse gas. Have your car serviced by a professional at the intervals recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer, which you’ll find in your manual. Use the specified oil and try to use a cleaner, synthetic oil in the viscosity stated in your manual. You might even consider using renewable biofuels. Your car service centre can advise on the most environmentally-friendly products to use in your particular vehicle.

Drive Smarter

How you drive has a big impact on your exhaust emissions. Drive slower and more smoothly instead of accelerating and braking hard. Even on the highway, you can save a lot of fuel by sitting on 100km/h instead of 110km/h, and use cruise control wherever you can. Also consider whether you really need to take the car at all. Is your destination within walking or cycling distance? Both modes of transport are free and clean.

Check Tyre Pressure

Check your tyre pressure every week or so and ensure your tyres are correctly inflated. Low tyre pressure creates drag and uses more fuel, as well as shortening the life of your tyres.

Lighten the Load

Don’t carry excess weight in your vehicle if you need it. When you store heavy equipment in your car, the extra weight uses more fuel, makes your engine work harder and increases dangerous exhaust emissions.

Hybrid Cars

One of the smartest things you can do to help the environment is to invest in a Hybrid vehicle. Hybrids use a combination of petrol and electricity that work in harmony to provide extra power and performance when you need it by using the petrol engine. However, when you’re in city traffic, the vehicle automatically switches to electricity to produce zero emissions. You’ll find a Toyota Hybrid vehicle to suit you and your needs at a first-rate Toyota car dealer. Toyota is committed to improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as being a significant contributor to a low carbon society.

Driving and the Environment: How to Travel Green

Over the years, the number of cars on our roads has increased exponentially and they’re now a major cause of pollution in cities. The development of Hybrid vehicles, such as Toyota’s Prius, that use a combination of petrol and electricity to reduce emissions has been a major factor in the battle to protect the environment and drive greener. There are also a number of ways you can do your bit to help reduce greenhouse gases every time you drive, no matter what kind of vehicle you have. With that in mind, here’s our guide to reducing your own carbon footprint and limiting the amount of pollution you create while you’re driving.
