Tips to Save Money at the Fuel Pump | Phil Gilbert Toyota

Fuel Saving Tips

These days of increasing fuel prices has everyone trying to save money by using less fuel. There are various ways to do it and everyone seems to have the best advice, from driving a Hybrid car to slowing down or driving less. You can never have too many fuel saving tips, so here’s our guide to filling your tank less frequently.

Drive Less

Obviously the less often you drive, the less fuel you’ll use. If you live in the city, consider whether you really need to take the car everywhere. If you can walk, cycle or car pool you’ll be saving money as well as reducing your carbon footprint. If you have to drive somewhere, think about multi-tasking and doing as many of your errands as you can on one trip instead of going out several times during the week.

Drive More Economically

There are a lot of ways you can drive more economically such as driving smoothly without hard braking, cornering or sudden acceleration. You can also avoid idling in peak hour traffic, use your air conditioner only when necessary, drive in the correct gear, and use cruise control when driving on the highway.

Maintain your Car Properly

A well-maintained vehicle is much more fuel efficient, so get yours serviced at the regular intervals specified in the manual or by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Using the right grade of oil and the recommended fuel type will also save you money in the long run, and your vehicle will run more smoothly and for longer.

Be more Aerodynamic and Travel Light

High speed driving while towing a caravan creates drag and makes your vehicle work harder, but little things like roof racks, bike racks and driving with the windows down also reduce fuel economy. Modern cars are sleek and aerodynamic to minimise drag, so keep the windows up and remove any unnecessary exterior fixtures.

While you’re doing that, consider anything inside the vehicle that doesn’t need to be there. Don’t use your car for storage, the extra weight you’re driving around uses extra fuel and makes the vehicle’s engine work harder.

Check Tyre Pressure

Under-inflated tyres reduces your vehicle’s fuel efficiency as does incorrectly aligned wheels. Check your tyre pressure regularly and get a wheel alignment if necessary.
