Warning Signs that Your Car is in Trouble

Trouble-free driving is something most of us take for granted, and if you regularly maintain your vehicle, it’s unlikely you’ll have too many issues with it. However, sometimes an unexpected and unavoidable problem can occur while you’re out driving, or even before you leave the driveway, so it pays to be aware of the signs your car needs help. Ignoring any of the warning signs and continuing to drive can lead to bigger more expensive problems later on, and could even put your life at risk in some situations. Here are some of the more common signs to listen and look for in your vehicle.

Indicator Lights

Indicator lights on the dashboard are there to let you know that something isn’t right. If there’s a problem with the engine, you might notice a red light, flashing or static, which stays on after you’ve started the car. Take note of what it’s telling you and don’t ignore it. Many small problems can be fixed early for minimal expense before they cause major damage.

Leaking Fluids

If you notice a pool of fluid collecting under your vehicle while it’s parked you’re most likely seeing the beginning of a major car problem. Cars can leak oil, coolant, brake and transmission fluid, and even fuel, and none of it is a good sign. Inspect the vehicle or call someone to find out why it’s leaking, don’t drive it anywhere, and preferably don’t even start it. Doing so will definitely result in expensive repairs.

Unusual Noises

Thumps, bangs, whirs, squeals, whines, and knocking noises are never a good sign. Try to determine where the sound is coming from and when it happens such as turning, braking or accelerating and get to a mechanic as soon as possible to have it looked at.

Excessive Vibrations

Excessive vibrations usually indicate a problem with tyres, wheels, suspension, axles, driveshaft, and sometimes the engine. Stop the vehicle and take a look at the outside of it for obvious signs such as low tyre pressure, then take it to a mechanic or service centre for diagnosis and repair.

Smoke

Black or grey smoke coming from your exhaust, or worse, entering the vehicle’s cabin, requires immediate action. Smoke coming from the exhaust indicates a problem with your engine and might be accompanied by noises or vibrations.

Exhaust fumes or smoke coming into the cabin can be deadly, and could be a sign of an exhaust or fuel leak, both of which are extremely dangerous and should be dealt with right away. Stop the vehicle and call roadside assistance for advice.
